Strawberries Shouldn't Cause Cancer

Methyl iodide, approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2007, is dangerously close to being approved as a soil fumigant for strawberry crops in California and spreading as a widely-used pesticide for crops around the country.

Methyl iodide causes cancer, is a known neurotoxin and thyroid disruptor and has also been proven to cause spontaneous abortions in late-term pregnancies.  It is so toxic that it is used to intentionally induce cancer cells in lab settings.  And yet, the EPA has decided that methyl iodide is fit for our food, for our communities and for our bodies.

The EPA can reverse its decision on methyl iodide at any point.  Now is the time to make sure they do so.

We will deliver your comments to the EPA by the end of June in collaboration with CREDO Action and the Pesticide Action Network of North America (PANNA). By signing the petition, you agree to receive periodic updates on offers and activism opportunities from Fresh and CREDO.

Methyl iodide is a known carcinogen, thyroid disruptor, and neurotoxin, and presents clear dangers to farm workers and surrounding populations when used for broadcast agricultural applications. We urge you to immediately re-evaluate the EPA's decision to register methyl iodide as a soil fumigant.

8122 Tue Jun 29 21:49:54 EDT 2010 Anonymous Oceanside, CA , US I live directly adjacent to Strawberry crops here in the North County of San Diego, California and am alarmed by the proposed reversal on the issue of Methyl Iodide, regarding Arysta® LifeScience™’s product More....Midas™. I speak to this issue with mixed interests and sympathies. A member of my soon-to-be-family is the head foreman of several farms here that grow berries for Dole®, which are distributed to Walmart™ box stores across the nation. He comes from a farm family in the community, third generation, going back almost 100 years. I am to marry the farmer's daughter. (No impolite jokes, please. This is serious.) So, I understand too well a farmer's fears in the face of difficult financial pressures, but I also have a perspective on the dangers of putting these options into the nervous hands of corporate self-interest. It is equally disturbing that corporate pressure by Arysta LifeScience lobbyists could set policy (no, actually reverse policy) for restrictions of this dangerous toxin. Literally, this issue affects me where I live. While I maintain a fondness for the use of land here for agriculture – despite strong disagreements with the current farming practices like monoculture and the use of petroleum-based fumigants and fertilizers, I hold out hope – it is wildly frustrating to be hit now with news of questionable cancer-causing chemical use, just when we are thinking of starting a family. In these already financially stressed times, I worry that the profit motive of distant corporations could imminently jeopardize our blossoming family’s health.

Please take the time to read the following information about Methyl Iodide and oppose the use of this hazardous chemical in my neighborhood.

”Lobbying for methyl iodide, we have a single company, the largest pesticide manufacturer in the world, Arysta LifeScience.”

I am deeply concerned with the pending approval of methyl iodide for use on strawberries and other food crops in California. Methyl iodide is a known human carcinogen, as well as a neurotoxin and disruptor of thyroid function. It can be especially damaging during fetal development, and it has no business being used as a fumigant in the open atmosphere.

I realize that the DPR has recently completed a study of the chemical. However, the conclusions seem deeply flawed. Scientists on the external panel that reviewed the DPR's findings on methyl iodide even stated that agricultural use would "result in exposures to a large number of the public and thus would have a significant adverse impact on public health."

Even the strictest regulations on application will surely not prevent exposure of workers, surrounding populations, and wildlife to this hazardous chemical.

I would like to register my emphatic opposition to the proposed approval of methyl iodide, and urge you and the DPR to immediately withdraw the recommendation to approve its agricultural use. The public health of all Californians demands no less.
